The Case Digesting Workflow

Importing and Searching Case Materials

The first step in any digestion task is identifying the source material. Case Digestor provides two primary paths for document input:

  • The Jurisprudence Library: Access a pre-indexed database of thousands of Philippine Supreme Court decisions. You can search by G.R. number, party names, or specific legal doctrines.
  • Custom Case Upload: For recent decisions or specific documents not yet in the central library, users can copy and paste text or upload plain text files directly into the digester interface.

Practical Tip: When searching the Jurisprudence Library, use keywords like "Illegal Dismissal" or "Naturalization" to see conceptual matches even if you don't have a specific citation.

Defining Digest Parameters

Before initiating the digestion process, you can define specific parameters to ensure the output aligns with your research goals. This context helps the AI prioritize the most relevant information:

  • Subject and Topic Mapping: Select the relevant Bar subject (e.g., Remedial Law) and specific syllabus topic (e.g., Execution of Judgments). This ensures the digest focuses on the doctrines relevant to that specific area of law.
  • Digest Scope: Choose between a "Concise Summary" for rapid review or a "Detailed Analysis" for deep-dive research into specific rulings and dissenting opinions.
  • Jurisdictional Context: Specify if the case should be analyzed in light of specific landmark rulings or statutory provisions.

Initiating the Digesting Process

Once the material is identified and parameters are set, you can initiate the AI-powered digestion.

  1. Click "Generate Digest": This sends the case text and your parameters to the AI engine.
  2. Confirm Credit Usage: The system will display the credit cost for the task. Most standard digestions consume only 1 credit.
  3. Real-Time Generation: Watch as the engine processes the text, identifying key sections of the decision in real-time.

Reviewing Generated Outputs

A finalized digest is presented in a structured, standardized format designed for readability and quick reference. Every digest typically contains:

  • Header Information: Case Title, G.R. Number, Promulgation Date, and Authoring Justice.
  • Facts: A chronological summary of the dispute, focusing on the legally significant events.
  • Issue: The core legal question(s) the Court was asked to resolve.
  • Ruling: The Court's decision, clearly broken down into the "Held" section and the "Ratio Decidendi" (the reasoning behind the law).
  • Doctrine: A one-to-two sentence summary of the key legal principle established or reaffirmed by the case.

Refining, Saving, and Exporting

The workflow doesn't end with generation; the platform allows you to treat the digest as a living document:

  1. Refinement: Use the built-in editor to add personal notes, highlight specific passages, or correct nuances based on your own reading.
  2. Organization: Save the digest to a specific Folder within your workspace for easy retrieval.
  3. Bookmarking: Mark landmark cases as Favorites for instant access from the sidebar.
  4. Portability: Use the Export button to download the digest as a PDF or copy the formatted text to your clipboard for use in a pleading, memorandum, or law school digest pool.
